Today we had our first "Baby and Me" swimming lesson. It is a class designed for babies 6 mos to 3 years to get them acquainted with the water. I figured since Collin loves the bathtub and sticking his face in the dog's water dish that the pool would be no problem. I was wrong.
I think the combination of the loud sounds from the indoor pool, lots of new faces and cold water didn't help us start off very well. They say that the pool is 82 degrees but it sure doesn't feel like it. The poor kid was freezing! The class is 30 minutes and for at least half of that he had a death grip on my neck. I didn't want to traumatize him but we just kept trying and eventually he relaxed. By the time the class was over he was laughing and clapping and back to his usual happy self. Hopefully it will get better each week.
The instructor advised us to get a polyester "Under Armor" type shirt for him to wear in the pool so it will keep the heat in. Unfortunately, he is still wearing his 3-6 month swimming trunks so I think a tiny polyester shirt may be difficult to find. So, now I am on a mission to find a shirt or a baby body suit so he doesn't freeze to death.
Collin continues to ravage the dog food bowl. I am at a loss as how to keep him out of it! I try to put it up but it never fails that I forget to put it back down when I leave and the poor dog is starving and thirsty. Poor Bosley is just going to have to learn to eat on a schedule and then his food will go bye-bye. But then what do we do about the water dish??? What kind of a parent am I that I can't make my kid stop playing in the dog food?
Collin is not walking yet but he does crawl around with one leg all the way out to the side so that he is almost standing up as he crawls. It is pretty funny. He loves dancing to all of his musical toys and any other music he hears. He babbles almost non stop. Usually he is very loud!
Collin has a couple of little plastic bats that he likes to carry (while crawling) around. He has learned that it is fun to bang them on things like the windows!! I'm just waiting to see what he will hit next.
I'm not sure if I have posted a list of careers that I think Collin will pursue. If I did sorry. Here it goes. I base this solely on his current behaivor and I'm sure the list will change often!
1. Hairdresser-he loves to "fix" my hair.
2. Dentist-He loves to get his hands in your mouth and poke around.
3. Makeup Artist-He loves to watch me put on makeup and he tries to grab everything I have in my hand. He will take the big powder brush and brush it on his face just like Mommy!
4. Baseball Player-self explanetory
5. Talk Show Host- He always has something to say and he's so stinking cute!!
6. Librarian-His books are his favorite toys-He LOVES them.
7. Anything that has to do with DOG FOOD
We are very excited that the weather is finally improving. We bought a bike trailer and I bought a new bike and baby bike seat. We have used the trailer and Collin LOVES it! The bike seat just arrived so I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. The other day Wyatt rode his bike with Collin in the trailer and I roller bladed beside them. Collin looked so perplexed by how I was right beside him rolling along. It was pretty funny! We have all kinds of fun plans for the Spring and Summer. He missed it last year but we have him home this year and we are going to make the most of it!!!

My soapbox about the Advent Conspiracy
I came across this video on another blog. I have to admit I only looked at it for entertainment value. I assumed with a title like that, it had to be some wacko conspiracy theory and who doesn't need a good laugh. Suprisingly enough it really touched me and made me think. It didn't grab my interest because of it's religious value, because that's not really my thing. I am not the type of person that flaunts religion or believes in pushing your beliefs onto others. It touched me because of it's human value and because it shows me how quickly I forget.
When we were in Guatemala it was truly a life changing experience for a myriad of reasons, only one of which was bringing home a baby! We saw poverty that we could never imagine in this country. I remember thinking when I was there that despite all of the stress of the situation, I was more at peace than I had ever felt in my life. Among other things, there was no pressure to have more...there was nothing to have. People just lived their lives. Families worked together, lived together in cramped housing-if they had a roof over their heads at all-and they were happy! We were forced to enjoy eachother without our "creature comforts" and I loved it. I now remember hoping that once we got home, I would never lose that idea that we don't really need much at all. I realized our society makes us think we need more but we really don't. And after watching the video it makes me realize that I have failed miserably.
I had made up my mind that in order to honor my new found attitude and our sons heritage, we would sponsor a Guatemalan family every year so that they could have food and heat and their children could go to school-things we take for granted on a daily basis. For some reason I can never seem to find the money to do that- BUT- I can find the money to buy coffee every day, sometimes several times a day, Collin will see a room full of gifts on Christmas morning, I can go out to eat, I can do whatever I want for the most part. My priorities have gone right back to where they were before I experienced Guatemala and it makes me sad. That is the reason that I am posting the video in a permenant spot on the blog, so that I am constantly reminded, not only during Christmas but all year to give PRESENCE to my friends and family not PRESENTS and to give back to something that I feel very strongly about. I don't write this to push Guatemalan charity or any charity but to encourage anyone reading this to slow down and take a look at your life and see what means the most to you and see where it takes you.
